Movie series "Property in view"

On June 23rd, we will show the movie Her (USA 2013).

About our series

Once a month during the semester, our series brings the debate on property issues to the big screen. We show a filmic treatment of conflicts over property, current dynamics of change and possible alternatives. A member of our Collaborative Research Center will give a brief introduction to the film at the beginning of the evening and shed light on the connections between the film and our property research. The film will be followed by a discussion with anyone from the audience who is interested. The films are usually shown in the original language with subtitles.

About the movie

Theodore Twombly’s story is set in the near future. While his job is to write touching, personal letters for strangers, he himself is newly divorced and lonely. He purchases the OS1 operating system, an artificial intelligence (AI) whose voice is named “Samantha.” Soon, Theodore falls in love with Samantha, who is a charming conversational partner for him. But what does it mean when an AI imitates real people but has no physical form of its own?

The film will be introduced by Jörg Oberthür, Sociologist at the University of Jena in the field of General and Theoretical Sociology.
