About our series
Once a month during the semester, our series brings the debate on property issues to the big screen. We show a filmic treatment of conflicts over property, current dynamics of change and possible alternatives. A member of our Collaborative Research Center will give a brief introduction to the film at the beginning of the evening and shed light on the connections between the film and our property research. The film will be followed by a discussion with anyone from the audience who is interested. The films are usually shown in the original language with subtitles.
About the movie
Wealthy white tourists travel to South Africa and Namibia to pay to shoot big game such as zebras, wildebeests, impalas, and giraffes. While they celebrate their trophies and take them home, the bloody work of gutting and taxidermy is left to the predominantly Black population. In this documentary film, director Ulrich Seidel portrays German and Austrian hunting tourists and their perspectives in his characteristic style – at times staged with an unsettling rigidity, yet unflinching and revealing.
Introduction by Anna Paul, a political scientist at the University of Jena working on the SFB subproject “Wild Animals as Commodities and More-Than-Human Property.”
