Theories of Property: An Introduction – Brown Bag with Niklas Angebauer and Tilo Wesche

2–4 p.m., SFB seminar room, 23rd floor of JenTower

Many current socio-political debates concern issues of property – from housing to data, from climate protection to wealth distribution. In their book ‘Theories of Property: An Introduction,’ Niklas Angebauer and Tilo Wesche trace the various (philosophical) justifications for property and address the question of the limits and barriers of property. The two authors will be available to answer questions about the vast world of property theories.

Structural change in property – radicalised private property, new forms of property and an astonishing forgetfulness of property

4–6 p.m., Seminar Room 274, Carl-Zeiss-Straße 3; (please note: starts on time!)

At this year's congress of the German Sociological Association, the sociological sub-projects of the SFB presented and discussed key research findings. Due to the great interest, there will be an "Encore" in Jena: at this event, nine 7-minute presentations will allow participants to delve into very different areas of property. The projects will present their findings on change, persistence and path dependencies in the fundamental social institution of property and discuss the surprising lack of attention paid to property in academia and society. Participants include: Silke van Dyk, Marlen van den Ecker, Luzie Gerstenhöfer, Stefanie Graefe, Matthias Groß, Malte Janzing, Philipp Köncke, Daniel Kunze, Lukas Lachenicht, Jörg Oberthür, Maria Pfeiffer, Tilman Reitz, Stefan Schmalz, Sylka Scholz, Sebastian Sevignani and Anne Tittor.

Book presentation ‘Umkämpftes Eigentum’ (Contested Property) with Tilo Wesche and Niklas Angebauer as part of the Jena Social Theory Colloquium

6–8 p.m., Seminar Room 274, Carl-Zeiss-Straße 3

We are currently witnessing a comeback of debates on property. Niklas Angebauer, Jacob Blumenfeld and Tilo Wesche offer the first comprehensive introduction to these debates in their book ‘Umkämpftes Eigentum’ (Contested Property): What are the consequences of financialisation for intellectual property and ownership of housing? What are the arguments in favour of common ownership? Are inheritances covered by the concept of property? These and other questions are addressed in the book, which editors Tilo Wesche and Niklas Angebauer will present at the colloquium.
